Steelers-Saints haiku contest winner

November 05, 2010 By: Admin Category: Haiku contests

Despite a loss by the Steelers, we still got quite a few very good entries for our haiku contest.

One reader asked “what do haiku contest winners win?”  Well, the contest has basically been for bragging rights.  However, because he asked the question, I am going to try to get a sponsor for the contest from now on.  If I’m successful, there will be a prize each week.

With that thought in mind, the winner of this week’s contest is going to win a copy of the book “The Ones Who Hit the Hardest” by Chad Millman and Shawn Coyne.  It’s a great book that belongs on the bookshelf of any Steelers fan.

This week's prize

Because the game was played on Halloween night, I gave special bonus points for any entries that were able to incorporate a Halloween theme into their haiku.

So without further ado, here are this week’s winners:

Our third place haiku was submitted by Fred Cole.

Are you kidding me
Where was the number one D?
We’re better than that

Excellent haiku.  It might have even won, but it didn’t have a Halloween theme.

In second place was Jim.  He submitted this exceptional Halloween haiku.

Spooky in the Dome
Saints blitzed early and often
BA was surprised

And this week’s prize winning entry was submitted by Fred Cole (that’s right, Fred placed twice this week).  Fred’s winning entry was the following:

On Hallows Eve night
Steelers got an awful fright
The Saints outplayed them

As much as we’d all like to make excuses for the loss, Fred hit the nail on the head.  The Saints simply outplayed our beloved Steelers.

Congratulations, Fred.  Please go to the “Contact us” tab on SteelersToday.com and leave us a message with your mailing address so we can send you your prize.  Or, if you prefer, send us a private message on our Facebook page.

Thanks, and congratulations.

Steelers-Dolphins haiku contest winner

October 30, 2010 By: Admin Category: Haiku contests

I got busy this week and forgot to announce the winner of last week’s haiku contest.  Sorry about that.

We got quite a few very good entries this week.  Several were from fans of other teams who admitted that they didn’t like the Steelers when they submitted their haiku.  Here are a few of those that were actually pretty good.

This one was submitted by Kavinay:

Instant replay fail
“By rule” refs made into goat
Steelers should have lost.

Another enemy submission came from Drew.  Drew admitted to being a Ravens fan.  He also admitted that the Steelers are, and will always be, superior to the Ravens (okay, I made up that last part).  Drew wrote:

Wow are they lucky
just like two thousand and five
refs hand them the gem

But enough with entries from opposing teams’ fans.  Let’s see what Steeler Nation had to say.

In third place this week was this entry by Jim

Steeler Nation bliss
Roger Goodell happy too
Dolphins not so much

Second place goes to Erica Day for this beauty:

We tried to give game
‘Phins did not want. kicked field goals
Refs just went with it

And the winner was submitted on our Facebook page by Thomas Hoffelder.  Thomas wrote:

Miami Fans thought
their team had won, up until
the word, “However,………”

That was an exceptional Haiku, Thomas. Congratulations! You are this week’s winner.

Steelers vs. Dolphins haiku contest

October 25, 2010 By: Admin Category: Haiku contests

The Steelers beat the Dolphins in a squeaker, and now it’s time for this week’s Steelers-Dolphins haiku contest.

The contest rules are simple. You must summarize the Steelers-Dolphins game in a haiku. A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that contains only 3 lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables. Typically, haiku do not rhyme.

Please note, the emphasis is on syllables, not words. Remember 5/7/5.

I start the competition by offering a haiku of my own. Then you readers write a haiku of your own to try to beat mine. On Thursday I will announce this week’s contest winner. But remember, your haiku has to be better than mine.  If none of your entries are better than mine, then I take home the prize.

Here is my entry:

Despite injuries
Steelers still manage to win
Thank you God……and refs.

Okay readers, your turn.  Lets see who can come up with the best haiku about the Steelers-Dolphins game.

Are you ready for some haiku?!!

Haiku contest winner

October 21, 2010 By: Admin Category: Haiku contests

We had some excellent entries in this week’s haiku contest.  But just like in the Highlander movies, in the end “there can be only one”.  So I had to choose one haiku as the winner.

Before announcing the winner, I want to acknowledge a few that didn’t win, but were very strong contenders.  Here are a few of my favorites:

This one was submitted by Paul.

The offense had life
The defense made them think twice
A win decisive

Another very strong contender was submitted by Suzanne.

The D is wicked
You’ll be shaking in your shoes
When they come for you!

The next one was submitted by Nathan.  I disqualified it from the competition because it wasn’t actually about the Steelers-Browns game.  But it was extremely good, so I wanted to acknowledge it.

Ben Roethlisberger
is an entire haiku
by himself, Okay?

But as I said earlier, in the end there can be only one.  And the winner is……….

They sent Colt McCoy
a boy to do a man’s job
should have known better

It was submitted by Christina Omogrosso Snaman.  Congratulations Christina.  Great work!

Steelers-Browns Haiku Contest

October 18, 2010 By: Admin Category: Haiku contests

Well the Steelers beat the Browns and stand alone in first place in the AFC North. That’s exactly where they belong.

Now that Big Ben is back with the team, I thought it would be a good time to bring back our weekly haiku contest.

The contest rules are simple. You must summarize the Steelers-Browns game in a haiku.

If nobody’s haiku is better than mine, then I take home the prize.

Here is my entry:

Now we have Big Ben
The final piece is added
Dallas here we come

Obviously, I chose to focus on Ben’s return.   But you can write about any aspect of the game.

Okay readers, your turn.  Lets see who can come up with the best haiku about the Steelers-Browns game.

Are you ready for some haiku?!!

This week’s featured item

Commemorate Big Ben’s return by purchasing this Reebok Ben Roethlisberger replica jersey. It comes with authentic styling, lasting quality, and weather-tested durability. A must-have for any Steelers fan.
