As you know, the S in “Sam” stands for “strong-side”, the W in “Will” stands for “weak side”, and the M in “Mike” stands for “middle”.

While the W and S are not scheme specific, the term “Mike” is used primarily in reference to the middle linebacker in a 4-3. It is generally not used to refer to the two inside linebackers in a 3-4. So in that regard, it actually is scheme specific.

The Sam,Will, and Mike Linebacker spots are not scheme-specific. You’re implying they are.

The Sam plays on the strong side, or where the TE is. For the Steelers, that’s generally Harrison. The Will plays on the weak side or where the TE isn’t. Now, that’s Woodley it used to be Haggans.

Then you’re left with the inside/mike linebackers–that would be Foote and Farrior.
