Pens Win Stanley Cup!!!!!!!

Steelers Today is a Pittsburgh Steelers blog.  We focus exclusively on NFL football.  We don’t talk about golf, or baseball.  We don’t talk about beer or babes.  Nope, we talk about the Steelers.

But today, for the first time, I am going to break that rule.  Today, we are going to talk about hockey.  That’s right, hockey.  Along with all other Pittsburghers, we at Steelers Today are celebrating the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Stanley Cup championship.

The Steelers are Super Bowl champs, and the Penguins are Stanley Cup champs.  What could be better?  The city of Pittsburgh has regained its title of “City of Champions”.  Now if only the Pirates could……….  Okay, maybe not.  But 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.

I’ll be honest with you.  I don’t know much about hockey.  I never played the game.  I can’t name all of the positions.  I don’t understand why most of the players speak french.  But I know that the world champs wear black and gold, so that’s good enough for me.

Since I don’t know much about hockey, I am going to write about the game in the only way I know how; like the football blogger that I am.  Here goes.

Sidney Crosby is the quarterback, or whatever the hockey equivalent of that is.  He led the AFC champion Penguins against the reigning world champion Detroit Red Wings.  Unfortunately, Crosby got hurt on a roughing the passer play by the Red Wings.  Somebody named Max Talbot came in to replace Crosby, and he proceeded to score a safety for the Penguins.

The Penguins took their 2-0 lead into the third quarter, only to see the Red Wings score a PAT.  I’m not sure how they managed to do that without actually scoring a touchdown, but somehow they managed to do so.  The Pens lead was cut to 2-1.

For reasons that I don’t quite understand, they only play 3 quarters in Hockey rather than 4.   But that’s a mystery for another time.  Suffice it to say that as the 3rd quarter wound down, the Red Wings were surging and it looked like they might tie the game.  But the Penguins went into their prevent defense and held on to the win the game.  Black and gold are champs again.

Here we go Penguins.  Here we go!

Oh yeah, before I forget; #@%^$! you, Marian Hossa!!!!!!

Okay, that ends our hockey digression.  Congratulations Penguins.  Next time you hear from us, we’ll be back to our regular Steelers talk.

  1. i am a fan of all the major sports in pittsburgh, no i am not from pittsburgh, was not born or raised in pittsburgh, i don’t have ties in pittsburgh, and no, i have never been to pittsburgh, so you ask, how is it that i am a fan of the pirates, of the penguins, and not to forget my beloved steelers. well it goes like this , i bacame a steelers fan waaaay back in 1978-79, the reason i chose the steelers is up to the point where i really didn’t pay attention to football, on this night, the steelers were playing the cowboys and i was at my dads girlfriends house at the time, the boys there were fanatic over the cowboys, and i just didn’t like thier uniforms, i liked the steelers however as they were wearing the black and gold, more dominating colors. i played hockey, and it was determined then, that if i were to like sports, i would keep it all simple and stay with one city, and it was pittsburgh, needless to say the pirates won the world series, with stargle and co. and the steelers won the superbowl, and the pens won the stanley cup,,,,,,,,so, yes i am excited that the steelers and penns won thier respective championships in the same year again,,,, now if we can only get the pirates to pull out a magical year, ,,,,,

  2. David,
Don’t hold your breath waiting for the Pirates to win a championship. ;-)

Ah… Pittsburgh: The City of Winners, The City of Loyalty, and again, The City of Champions… With the naming of Pgh as the Nations Most Livable City (AGAIN!) this time by the ‘Economist’ — I’m starting to think that God is not only a Steelers Fan… but in fact, really a Pittsburgh Fan! How appropriate that Art Rooney was seen last week in attendance at Mario’s venue at the igloo… cheering on the Pens. Is it a co-incidence that The steelers win, The Pens win, and Hossa loses? I think not.

Great article! I watch hockey, but like you, know a lot more about football. Hockey is the fastest game I can think of and so exciting. Watching our beloved Pens bring home the cup was just as exciting as watching our beloved Steelers bring home another Lombardi. I am walking on clouds… and headed to Steelers training camp in August for the 1st time. Can’t wait!

All of my family is from Pittsburgh (though I was born — between the first two Super Bowls — and live in Baltimore, God help me…), and I have _no_ problem switching back and forth between the Pittsburgh football and hockey worlds (in fact, I wish that their seasons didn’t overlap so much, but the playoffs are nice and far apart, at least). The Penguins’ turnaround is amazing; I _expected_ them to lose to the Red Wings last year (heck, I was amazed we weren’t _swept_), but I had a different feeling this season, with that losing experience under their belts and the fact that the Ducks gave the RWs so many problems. I was despondent after Game 5, but I certainly didn’t give up hope — and we were rewarded with Scuderi’s triple-goaltending heroics at the end of Game 6 and Fleury’s “Secret Service taking one for the Prez” manoeuver to cap Game 7 in grand fashion. (It’s right up there with Ben-to-Santonio. 8^)

Experiencing the Pens’ first two Stanley Cups was awesome, but this took the cake, especially with the “closing of the circle” — you really couldn’t _write_ a better script (and all of the elements) for a championship series!!! This one had _everything_ (drama, revenge, redemption, great hits, and an awesome “villain” in Detroit ;^), and Mario finally receiving the Cup and then passing it once again to Crosby was one of those all-time-great sports moments. (Cassius/Muhammad, eat your heart out!!!)

  6. Stillersfan,
I couldn’t have said it better. There really is no place like Pittsburgh.

Great first contribution. Intelligent readers like you are always welcome. Please stop by and share your thoughts again.

  7. Steeler Chick,
I am definitely going to have to increase my knowledge of hockey. The Pens have made me a fan.

I will be at Steelers training camp too, and I can’t wait either. August can’t get here fast enough.

  8. Doug,
Glad you were able to maintain faith in the Pens. I have to confess, there were several points during the series when I was certain the Pens were going to lose. Particularly after they dropped the first 2 games.

The great thing is both the Steelers and the Pens have to potential to repeat. Wouldn’t that be sweet?

  9. Doug Halfen says:

Hey, I’m _ecstatic_ that both teams have _plenty_ of mileage left in them; the potential for further championships, even if not immediate (i.e., next season), is _very_ strong. Repeats would obviously be wonderful!!!

The first two games didn’t worry me too much (deja vu, actually); despite the lack of scoring, the boys played quite well, just without the lucky breaks you kinda need in that environment. I expected that the Igloo crowd would light a fire under the Pens’ buns, and it did. But that Game 5 seemed like the end of the world. Dan Rosen, the NHL’s blogger, wrote of the Detroit fans and his own expectations then:

15:30: They’re chanting, “We want the Cup.” It’ll be in Pittsburgh for sure.

That set my blood to boiling! Good thing Max said to the Detroit bench, “We’ll see you Tuesday!” We know how _he_ made ‘em pay for that arrogance…

The fact that our boys totally turned the corner after that brutal loss speaks all the more eloquently and certainly of their potential. YOWZA!!!

  10. And GOD looked to the EARTH and said unto THEE… MY CREATION is almost complete.

I,THE LORD have given the HUMAN RACE signs of…FORGIVENESS,HUMBLENESS,FAITH and LOVE!

NOW..I will show MAN and WOMAN… MY ULTIMATE STRENGTH,POWER,FORTITUDE and WISDOM… that makes “EVIL”… TREMBLE,RUN and FEAR THE WRAITH OF GOD!

On this SACRED DAY..I CREATE…..THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS!!!!!!
