Steelers to draft 18th

January 05, 2010 By: Admin Category: Draft/Free Agency

I guess the season is officially over for your team when the league announces in what position they will draft.  Playoff teams still don’t know their draft order.

Being a non-playoff team, the NFL announced that the Pittsburgh Steelers will have the 18th pick in the 2010 draft.  The Steelers were given the best pick of all of the teams that ended up tied with a 9-7 record.  That means the league thinks we were the worst of the five 9-7 teams.  I guess something good came out of all of those losses to weak opponents.

Since 2005, the Steelers have drafted 30th, 25th, 15th, 23rd, and 32nd.  So as you can see, the Steelers don’t draft this early very often.

Here are some of the players who have been drafted at the 18th pick or later in the 1st round of recent NFL drafts.

2006 – Antonio Cromartie, Nick Mangold, DeAngelo Williams

2007 – Leon Hall, Joe Staley, Jon Beason

2008 – Joe Flacco, Chris Johnson, Felix Jones

2009 – Alex Mack, Percy Harvin, Michael Oher

As you can see, the Steelers should have an opportunity to draft a very good player.  Some positions such as left tackle, quarterback, and cornerback tend to go very high in the draft.  Thus, the best players at those positions will probably be gone before the Steelers make their first pick.  However, the Steelers may be able to get the top safety, guard, or center in this year’s draft, should they choose to select any of those positions.

Of course we won’t know what players are going to be available in the draft, or what other teams’ needs are for a while.  However, this gives us something positive to think about now that the Steelers are no longer playing.

  1. Yes, we need a top safety. And it appears to be a good year for safety. I would imagine that Eric Berry from Tennessee and Taylor Mays from USC might be gone, but there are others (Thomas, Texas) that would still be there. Maybe we can trade up and get one? Just throwing it out there. I thought Ryan Clark was that dude, but he isn’t. I do not think Ryan Mundy is it either.

  4. I have a question that is indirectly related to the draft and that is what would be an accurate description of the Steelers offensive style? I think that we could be described as a run and shoot style of offense, the only difference is that instead of 4 WR’s we tend to throw a TE in the mix. This could possibly effect what players that we would go after, meaning we are probably only going to draft on the defensive side of the ball. What does everyone else think?

  5. i think our offense is just shoot

  7. Guys – Let’s talk about Arians. (With deference to The Clash…) Should he stay or should he go now? I have been a harsh critic of his based on our red zone performance (21st in the league in TD conversions); the imbalance of running vs passing; and the sacks (which are caused by many reasons-not all of which are Arians fault-what is his fault is the lack of screens & draws we ran when Ben was running for his life! Few play calling adjustments.)We know Ben loves him and there is value in that. Could we get someone truly better that would add to Ben’s development? Or do we have enough ‘other’ priorities, such as fixing our defense and special teams?
Interesting debate. My prediction is that Tomlin won’t cut ties with Arians or our special team’s coach (don’t want to butcher the spelling of his name.)

  8. ST coach

  9. oops computer went crazy on me…

ST coach MUST go. No question about it. I could bite my tongue if arians stayed as long as they re-tooled some things (like more running, more screens and dump offs, etc…) but if ST coach is not fired I will seriously question if Tomlin has even a small clue.

I’m telling you, Tomlin has alot to prove to me at this point! I was pulling for Kenny W. to be our coach and felt that Tomlin was a token hire to give more validity to the Rooney rule. But even with that I chose to believe in the Rooneys in their ability to hire well. I wanted Joe Greene instead of Cowher when Cowher was hired. Shows what I knew.

But lets face it. Cowher only took a bad team to the playoffs in his first year and 3 or 4 years afterwards and the rest is history.

And if you remember, Cowher was constantly having to replace assistant coaches because the rest of the league was after them. I don’t see anyone clamoring after Tomlin’s guys.

  10. It was the 15th pick, I believe, that got us Holmes.
