Steelers vs. Texans Preview

September 29, 2011 By: Admin Category: Pre-Game Analyses

The Steelers will travel to Houston to take on the Texans on Sunday.  The game will be televised nationally on CBS.

This is a pivotal game for both teams.  Each team has a 2-1 record, but both teams have shown major flaws which need to be addressed.

The Texans have traditionally been a high-scoring team.  This year they’re 7th in the NFL in scoring, averaging 30 points per game.  However, despite the impressive scoring output, the Texans’ offense has actually struggled.  They’ve played without 2010 NFL rushing leader Arian Foster for most of the season, and they’ve struggled in the red-zone without him.

Foster’s back-up, Ben Tate, has been more than adequate in Foster’s absence.  He’s run for 301 yards in the Texans first 3 games, and the Texans rank fifth in the NFL in rushing yards.  However, the Texans rank 30th in the NFL in red-zone percentage.   They’ve managed to score on just 5 of 16 trips inside the 20 yard line.  Last week, against the New Orleans Saints, they were only able to score a touchdown on 1 of their 5 times in the red-zone.  Instead of touchdowns, they settled for 4 field goals.

Last year, Foster led the NFL in rushing touchdowns, and the Texans were fifth in red-zone percentage.  So his return should do a lot to help fix their red-zone woes.

The Steelers have had struggles of their own.  They’ve had difficulty playing on the road so far.  They got crushed in Baltimore, and barely squeezed out a win last week in Indianapolis.  So traveling to Houston may not be a good thing for the Steelers.

But perhaps more concerning for the Steelers is the fact that their offensive line, which was already struggling, got dinged up pretty badly against the Colts.  Jonathan Scott, Doug Legursky, and Marcus Gilbert all got hurt during the game.

Colts’ defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis had their way with the Steelers offensive line last week.  And things aren’t going to get any better this week when they face the Texans’ Mario Williams.  Williams is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, and he may be better than either Freeney or Mathis.

Steelers left tackle Jonathan Scott seems to struggle against speed rushers.  He also struggles against big, powerful bull rushers.  He actually got pushed backwards fairly consistently last week by Dwight Freeney, who is fairly small for his position.  So what’s he going to do against Mario Williams, who is big, strong, and super fast?

For those of you who aren’t familiar with him, Williams is slightly bigger than Brett Keisel, but he runs like Lawrence Timmons.  See the problem?

Another player who may give the Steelers problems is Texans’ wide receiver Andre Johnson.  Johnson is one of the best receivers in the league.  He’s 3rd in the league in receiving, and will provide a worthy challenge for Steelers’ cornerback Ike Taylor.

Ultimately, the final outcome of the game may be determined by the Steelers’ front 7.  If they can stop the Texans’ running game, that will greatly aid in sealing a win.  Over the past 10 years, the Steelers have been one of the best teams in the NFL at stopping the run.  But for some reason, they’ve struggled in that area this season.

In particular, the left side of the Steelers’ defense has struggled.  Aaron Smith has been unsuccessful at holding his ground and occupying blockers, and LaMarr Woodley has applied almost no pressure to the quarterback.

I anticipate the Steelers are going to struggle with offensive line issues for the rest of the season.  That same issue has plagued the team for at least the last 3 seasons, so there’s nothing new there.  But if Smith and Woodley can pick up their respective games, then the Steelers have a real chance of leaving Houston with a victory.

2009 bloggers’ mock draft: pick #15

March 15, 2009 By: Admin Category: Draft/Free Agency

Steelers Today has hooked up with 31 other NFL bloggers from around the country to do a bloggers’ mock draft. All 32 NFL teams are represented in the mock draft.

The mock draft is sponsored by Cleveland Browns blog No Logo Needed. For more details on the bloggers’ mock draft, click here.

With the fifteenth pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Houston Texans blog Houston Diehards selects…

Michael Oher, offensive tackle, Ole Miss
michael-oher

Well, this is unexpected. The Texans picked their LT of the future in the
first round last year, but with all the players I wanted off the board -
and an elite talent like Oher slipping, I have no choice but to take him.
Oher will be the LT, Duane Brown can move to RT, and current RT Eric
Winston can move inside, which would be a significant upgrade to an
already drastically-improved offensive line.

Quick, nimble, and athletic, Oher weighs 309 and is a great fit for the
zone blocking scheme that helped to make RB Steve Slaton a rookie of the
year candidate last season.

Houston’s two biggest positions of need are OLB and DT. However Oher is
an ELITE talent, whereas the best players left at those positions may or
may not slip to Houston’s 2nd round pick.

This was a difficult choice to make because for weeks now I’ve been
railing against mocks that have the Texans taking ANY offensive players,
but since I’m a “build from front to back” guy, I can’t help but jump all
over a player of Oher’s caliber.

The draft results so far are shown below. Click on the individual pick to read the blogger’s rationale for his selection.

1. Detroit Lions: Mathew Stafford, QB (Georgia)
2. St. Louis Rams: Eugene Monroe, OT (Virginia)
3. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Curry, LB (Wake Forest)
4. Seattle Seahawks: Michael Crabtree, WR (Texas Tech)
5. Cleveland Browns: Rey Maualuga, LB (Southern California)
6. Cincinnati Bengals: Jason Smith, OT (Baylor)
7. Oakland Raiders: Jeremy Maclin, WR (Missouri)
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: B.J. Raji, DT (Boston College)
9. Green Bay Packers, Brian Orakpo, DE (Texas)
10. San Francisco 49ers, Everette Brown, OLB (Florida State)
11. Buffalo Bills, Clay Matthews, OLB (Southern California)
12. Denver Broncos, Malcolm Jenkins, CB (Ohio State)
13. Washington Redskins, Andre Smith, OT (Alabama)
14. New Orleans Saints, Brian Cushing, OLB (Southern California)
15. Houston Texans, Michael Oher, OT (Ole Miss)

The San Diego Chargers are on the clock.

Steelers vs. Houston Texans Preview

September 06, 2008 By: Admin Category: Pre-Game Analyses

The Houston Texans (boo!!!!) come to Heinz Field to play the season opener against our Pittsburgh Steelers (Yay!!!!!). The game is scheduled to start at 1:00PM EST.

This will be the two teams’ third meeting since the Texans joined the NFL as an expansion team in 2002. During that inaugural season, the Texans upset the Steelers 24-6. During their second meeting in 2005, the Steelers defeated the Texans 27-7. Many consider the Texans to be an up and coming team, so a Steelers victory is not assured.

Here are a few things to watch in Sunday’s game. In my opinion, these elements may well determine the outcome of the game.

Mario Williams and the Texans front 4 versus the Steelers offensive line

The Texans boast three 1st round picks on their defensive front four. Last year, defensive end Mario Williams finally started to look like a #1 overall draft pick after a lackluster rookie year. The 6’7” Williams is a nightmare for offensive linemen. He’s tall, strong, incredibly fast, and weights 290 pounds. That’s a tough challenge for even the best left tackles. Williams recorded 14 sacks, and was constantly in opposing backfields.

Mario Williams harassing another QB

Mario Williams harassing another QB

Last year, the Steelers’ offensive line gave up 47 sacks during the regular season, and 6 more during the playoffs for a total of 53 sacks. Over the past two years, they’ve given up 97 sacks. Few teams have given opposing defenses such easy access to their quarterback. If I didn’t know better, I’d be asking Big Ben what he did to make his offensive line hate him so much.

The Steelers offensive line has to at least be competitive in this battle, or Byron Leftwich may have to finish the game as Ben Roethlisberger is being rushed to the hospital on a stretcher.

Santonio Holmes versus Jacques Reeves.

The Texans most talented cornerback, Dunta Robinson is starting the season on the physically unable to perform list. Unlike Casey Hampton, Robinson is not on the PUP list because he can’t resist Krispy Kremes. Robinson injured his knee last November in a game against the Raiders, and is still not fully recovered.

Playing in Robinson’s place will be former Dallas Cowboy CB Jacques Reeves. Reeves is a proven veteran, but he is no Deion Sanders. Reeves is known as a sure tackler who gives up a lot of completions. I’m sure Santonio Holmes is salivating as he thinks about this match-up. Holmes led the league in yards/catch last season, and playing against Reeves, he should be able to continue that success.

James Harrison versus Texans LT Duane Brown

Hey rookie, welcome to the NFL!!!! Now you know why they call him “Silverback”. But don’t feel bad, he did the same thing to Browns LT Joe Thomas last year during Thomas’ inaugural game.

Andre Johnson versus Steelers CB’s

Andre Johnson is a big receiver at 6’3”, 219 lbs. Johnson is one of the most under-rated receivers in the NFL. He is incredibly productive, and last year he had 851 yards receiving despite missing 7 games due to injury.

Pittsburgh Special Teams versus Texans punt and kickoff return teams

Last year, the Steelers special teams provided opponents with wider lanes than the Pennsylvania Turnpike. During the pre-season, it appeared that little has changed. If the Steelers are to win, they have to prevent their opponents from “taking it to the house” on kickoff and punt returns.

Rashard Mendenhall versus “Mr. Oops”

Will Mendenhall prove to be the talented back that the Steelers thought they were getting when they drafted him in the 1st round of the 2008 NFL Draft, or will he prove to be the fumble machine that he was during the preseason?

Ooops!
